Commando camshaft in a Dommie?

Forums

I have read about people fitting later Commando cam in Dommies. The reason seems to be that a solid cam don't break as easily as the hollow Dommie cam. Of cource this means fitting another type of breather. Is it a simple replacement or are there other things which has to be done?

Pros and cons?

Hello Mikael - The later Commando camshafts also have the worm-gear drive for the tacho that gets in the way on a Dommie.  It must be machined off the camshaft.  As you also say,  you may need to machine in the slots for the rotary-timed breather disc.  The early Commando camshafts are the same as the Atlas and later 650 varieties - therefore hollow.  Good Luck, Howard

Hello Mikael, I think you will find that the right hand end of the Commando cam is totally different to the Dommie and you would be unable to fit the drive sprocket that the Dommie uses, also there is the problem of the tacho drive gear and no thrust ring but there is provision  to drive a breather disc, not that this helps as I'm sure the cams are not interchangeable.

Hi Mikael,  I have a new 2S  Hemmings cam  that will go straight in to a Dommy. Change of plans means I won't be needing it.

Thank you all for making it more clear for me. Especially Robert for his kind offer. I think I'll stay with the old cam as it is in good shape and build the 650 engine in standard trim. As it is a total renovation of the whole bike, I think I have enough things to attend to. When completed and everything sorted out, then I might think of "improving" performance. The idea with this bike is to play with it on track days for road bikes. Thus I'll get more track time than I can get on the classic races. Anyhow it will have more power but will be heavier than the 40M.

I highly recommend the PW3 camshaft (designed by Peter Williams). Especially if you want to use your bike on the track, but it is also great on street legal bikes. You can by this camshaft suitable for Dominater or for Commando.

I have thought about PW3, but decided to wait and bought new conrods and a new oil pump instead. Wife has mentioned something about priorities. Don't really know what she meant by that.

Hello why a Commando cam  and why a PW3 cam  when now twin carbs are no longer needed   on our roads of today   yes On today's road you need reliability not speed  so it pointless to fit a PW3 cam or a Commando can in a early  dominator,  fit the right cams  there less trouble  and riding on our roads today you have more and more speed cams  speed restriction bumps  and 20 mile a hour zones  and 30 or 40 mile an hour zones   and congested roads  and B and C road have pot holes and uneven surfaces   no wonder  there are more off /on road modern motorcycles bought now then sport bikes  So you can no long  open up the throttle any more,  and fitting high lift cams is only putting more and more strain on other components   like valve springs and rocker arms and push rod  witch will all fail in time,  So Concentrate  on making your motorcycle reliable,   and just enjoy a slow ride,  you will see more, and to add to this our police now have a zero tolerance on speeders you will loose your license    So I can see prices of smaller motorcycles only going up and big bikes going out,  and there is more electric E-bikes coming on the market   So set the throttle stop screw so you do not get full throttle this may save your license  Slow down your heels                              yours  anna j
