Jubilee battery

Forums

Re conversion to 12 volt. Mines a deluxe model. Has anyone managed to fit a 12 volt battery into the existing battery tray behind the side panel. Ive had a quick look on line and they all seem to be a bit bigger than the tray. Would prefer to keep the tray.

Thanks

John.

Yes. I have a 12v battery fitted in the tray. It is branded as an Aerco, Coventry, England and the code number is YB3L - A. It came from a trader at Rufforth auto jumble a good few years ago. It was purchased on the scientific principle - it was the smallest 12V battery and even more importantly it was the cheapest battery he had. It still manages to keep a charge. Actually the battery tray on the De Luxe holds a bigger battery than the tray in the toolbox on the Standard.

Did you know that there are new regulations in force about battery acid? Effectively now you must have a battery already filled with acid (or an AGM battery ) and you cannot legally be supplied with battery acid in a separate container.

Patrick, yes I know about the acid.

Cannot find a 12 volt battery that will fit the tray. Some of 12 volts are only a bit larger than the 6 volts. Should be able to alter the tray. Ive got about 15mm to the right side and above plus about 20mm in front

Thanks

Hi John,

I have just measured the battery tray on my 1959 Jubilee De Luxe and I make the measurements ;

Length 130mm, Width 70mm, Height 150mm.

The 12V YB3L-A measures;

Length 100mm, Width 55, Height 115mm.

Dan's battery measures - per the web site ;

Length 114mm, Width 70mm, Height 87mm.

So they all fit. The YB3L-A seems to be the identical size to a six volt Yuasa sitting here on my bench - normally fitted to the Navigator de Luxe.

I have just purchased last week a Motobatt MB12U for the 1959 Yamton and it seems a cracking good battery - the self starter really spins the engine easily. But that is a much bigger/more powerful battery which fits under the seat in a special battery tray.

Hi Dan,

I regularly swop batteries of the YB3L-A size between the De Luxe and the Standard without any problems so I think the battery tray in each is actually very similar. At first glance I thought the Standard battery tray was smaller than the De Luxe.

Your Motobatt is fatter and lower and slightly longer than the traditional 6v or the YB3L-A but fits in either of them according to my measurements of an actual De Luxe tray. It looks a little fat in the Standard -presumably the lid does fit on?- so there is actually more space in the De Luxe for the fatter battery. (I measured three De Luxe trays -all were the same size)

Hi Patrick, thanks, and yes the lid fits on perfectly! I borrowed the motobatt from my son in lawâs aprilia 125 when I was first getting the Jubilee to run, it fitted so I bought one! I previously used one for my Gasgas 400which it spun over much faster than the exide it replaced and they require less maintenance in the winter.

Dan
