Piston clearance (1962 Dominator)

Forums

Greetings ,

Have been trying to find out what the ideal piston clearance should be and what I have found on the net varies from .0005 all the way to .0010 ( Supposedly for racing engines)

Any help will be greatly appreciated, as always

The bike is used as a regular ride in Manila , Phillipines andthe weather is quite hot and humid most of the time.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, as always

Cheers

Rajiv

My understanding of your question is that you are asking about the piston to bore clearance.

For most Norton Dominator Twin engines the recommended piston/bore gap using Imperial measuring is between 3.5 thou and 4.5" thou. (thousandths of one inch). Often written as 0.0035" to 0.0045" and generally measured at the bottom of the bore thrust face.

On my steam driven calculator this equates in metric as follows:-

0.0035" = 0.088mm

0.0045" = 0.114mm

Aiming for the middle measurement of 4 thou (0.004) .... this roughly equals 0.10mm which is a nice easy feeler gauge to find either in Imperial or Metric size.
