Bike Insurance

Hello lads, any one recommend a good insurance company. My old bike are with specialist bike insurers I enquired today about my 961 but they think they will struggle as they only normally cover old bikes.

Your thoughts please

Hi John Clem recommended Gary Young 01206 821330 who gave me a good quote and are very pleasant and efficient to deal with. Clive

Always use MCE - they give me one policy with all my '60s and '70s classic bikes plus my 961 on it. Good value.

Hi James - interesting ... for years I've tried to find an insurance company (or broker) who'd cover my Classics and include my 2012 400cc 'Super-Scooter'. They can all cover my 1974 Norton and 1971 BSA and my 2007 Royal Enfield (which is arguably, not a 'Classic') but none can include the scooter thus I have to take out a separate policy for this one bike which is probably not really cost-effective. I wonder whether (as for my Enfield) MCE regard your 961 as a 'sort-of' Classic due to the name on the tank? My scooter is a Sym - an excellent and very practical machine.

I note that the MCN December issue gives a figure of £96 for the 961, albeit a 2012 example, which seems extraordinarily cheap.

Bikesure quoted me £266 for a new 961 (I have one no fault accident where someone in the wrong lane drove into the side of my car last June), I've never claimed on a bike policy for the fifty years I have held insurance.

If I added the bike to my existing policy (Triumph Scrambler and CB750F2) it actually worked out more expensive overall so I was advised to take out a separate policy. I also have a Honda Fireblade for which the insurers would not include any other bike and insisted on a separate policy. (Bring back the Norwich Union Rider policy!)

I used CN for years until they separated my old and new bikes into two different policies, automatically renewed and doubled my cost. Not any more....

I'd second Gary Youngs. I had problems with most others not recognising the Dominator on thier list of Nortons. You deal with a person at Allstyles ( trading name)

I have a multi bike policy with them including a Super Motard that CN would't cover.

Carol Nash for me. Three classics and a modern Triumph on one policy with European breakdown included, at a reasonable price. Can't beat them. The

trying to get this bike insured is a nightmare most companies not interested want factory fitted trackers immobilisers and a man eating dog fitted to the bike.

M C E will not answer their phone on hold for 15 min at £ 7.0 a min and hung up on me and thats before a claim.

Carol Nash over £ 400 an thats the best so far.

My MCE fully comprehensive policy covers 4 bikes - '73 Mk1a 850 Commando , '76 Mk3 850 Commando , '62 BSA Rocket Gold Star and Mk1 961 Sport Commando for a total Pounds 492 current premium.Sounds like MCE have got pretty busy. When I first insured with them 6 years ago they couldn't have been more accommodating , offering 15 months cover for the first policy - just the three Nortons initially with the BSA added a couple of years later. Try calling them early morning as they open for business.

i use bikesure for my modified ES2, CN for my standard road registered bikes and Moris for my unregistered race bikes. I tried to get them all on one policy but it was nigh on impossible for a sensible price!

A little off topic but when in Australia, Shannon's also covered bikes under restoration (CN do this too for a very reasonable price) but Shannon's also covered tools, spares and memorabilia.

Is there anyone that will cover for these items, as I have a lot of tools and normal household 'contents' cover is garbage for valuable shed equipment, tools & spares? Spoke with Carol Nash, good price for X 4 bikes but no cover for the rest as above.

Any ideas?

Rgds. Steve

I read this today and immediately spoke with MCE. A complete waste of time; I have three classic bikes and a modern lightweight for which I pay £210 comprehensive with European Breakdown Cover. MCE quoted me £640 and their recovery system only worked up to 20 miles from home.

I live in remote Devon so not exactly the teeming Metropolis.

I will keep looking around, ride safe, cheers Mick
