Panel type tank finish

Forums

I am putting the finishing touches to a 1937 CS1 that I am building. I am about to have the tank chromed. It is a panel type tank but I am unsure of what finish was applied to the panel part of ther tank. I have seen some painted some in bright chrome and some in a satin type chrome. Does anyone out there know what the original finish would have been on the panel? Paul Gibbons Bromley Kent.

I've been through this issue recently...When I took the paint off mine the upper and lower surfaces were very similar indeed. Both were a beautiful matt silver-grey dull chrome finish. Sadly the top also had quite extensive rust (which is why somebody crudely slapped paint on it) so I had it chromed. Now it's quite wrong, being glossy 'satin' finish.I don't want the bike off the road so it'll stay like it is. But I am fairly sure it should look much more like a modern bead blasted finish. Maybe bead blasting before chroming would have been closer. Maybe some other expert knows how to get the dull chrome. The finishing touch is the small gold 'Norton' transfer in the centre (from 'Classic Transfers' in my case). They also have the correct tank side transfer but take a lot of care to choose the right one from a confusing site. There were so many small changes to the script...

Just seen the copy of the 1938 Norton instruction handbook on the Vintagenorton site.  It has the picture I have been looking for of the top of a bike (to show control layout) with the panel type tank.  At last it confirms that (by 1938 anyway) the top panel was not painted or lined.  Some highly restored US collectors' bikes on the web show them painted black with red edge lining, but this appears to confirm that is not correct for 1938.  Whether is was done earlier is anyone's guess.  Photos of the top seem to be rare.

One of the pictures also shows lining outside the tank side panels (as well as the cow's udder).
