1954 Norton International Model 30 - help with a few questions please

Forums

Hello

I'm new to the club and would like help with a few questions regarding a 1954 International Model 30 please. I'm in the process of buying it, but just doing a bit of due diligence.

The frame is brazed and possibly a Clubmans version. How would I tell if it is? I've searched on-line and can't find an answer.

The engine and frame numbers are not matching. How will that affect the value of the bike?

The gearbox identification stamping was a bit faint, but reads GB21 BXX (the Xs are obviously numbers). I'm curious as to the 'B' in the second part...does it signify anything?

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon, you may get a response from this Forum but you could contact the NOC records officer for detailed information. We almost certainly have the factory record for this motorcycle. Click on records or email recordspostwar@nortonownersclub.org

Hi Tim. Thanks, but I have two printouts from the factory records...I presume from the club. They are from C J Streather, Records Officer. The frame and engine numbers are from different bikes and neither has a gearbox number that matches the one in the bike. Regards, Simon.

Has a good section on Gearbox identification from page 121. Do you think the “B’s” could be 8’s?

People ask a premium for matching numbers.  Nobody can know if they achieve it.  I suspect there's not a lot in it for bikes that were quite possibly raced but have no historical record of one of the Greats riding them.

Doesn't your frame record say what model your frame came with? Inter or 'M'?

I understood that the Manx frames were sif bronze brazed Renolds 531, but the Inters were welded steel like the other road bikes. Apart (allegedly) from some final ones.   The rear frame loop is wider radius on the Manx frame. It's obvious from pictures.

Was there a "clubman"?  It's not mentioned in my books.  Buyers could order an Inter with racing accessories, but the frames and engines define the difference.

The club has an OHC specialist - Barry Stickland - contact details in Roadholder. You should contact him. He is the ‘go to’ specialist on Featherbed Inters.

Thanks for everyone for your input.

I'm in contact with one of the club's records officers now, who is kindly looking into this for me.
