1947 ES2 Speedo drive

Forums

I am rebuilding a 1947 ES2

The speedo drive which came with it is a BG5330/171 ratio 1.25 is this correct? In my 1947 parts list it is listed as a B2/546 but no ratio is given, the 1948 parts list states B2/564 - perhaps one the two is a typo? The drive is a snug fit on the spindle with an approx 11/16" hole through it.

Also I have no spacer A2/441 (S.32 in the 1948 parts list) protruding through the bearing locking ring, I guess this is essential to stop the speedo drive locking onto the wheel hub.

... the spacer which as you suspect is to stop it all locking up. I don't know about the ratio but have a feeling that the 1.25 is for Commandos and the earlier bikes like yours (and mine) are 2:1 but I'm sure someone with better knowledge will turn up soon.

.. have you gone? I'd expect it to be the same as most of the 50s bikes.

The oldest literature I can find (in Scandinavian) gives a part number for the drive as 52283/4 but no ratio, this is for 51 - 53 ES2's.

The drive I have looks identical externally to the one on my Commando, I have not taken the wheel off the Commando to check the ratio but suspect you are correct.

The 52283 series has the drive connection thread on the opposite side as per the two bikes in the NMCM - see attachments.

but memory says that the Norton speedo drive is 2:1.  It's a fairly common ratio.  I needed one a while back and found a very nice one with a small axle size.  Not a difficult task to open it out.

Managed to source the correct drive, opened the hole up to 11/16", purchased the spacer (A2/441) from the  Owners Club only to be left with the same problem detailed in Darren Hutchinson's post of 22/11/2020 https://nortonownersclub.org/node/11586

Can anyone point me in the direction of the right spacer which according to the above post should be 15mm wide or should I just machine 6mm off the spacer I received - not sure how critical the width is?

Thanks, Mark
