Ignition timing on a Model 50

Forums

Could anyone explain how to set up the timing on a Model 50. I have set the top dead centre at 38 degrees and then I need to move the points so they just open, while fully advanced. I cannot see how to do this. Also do I undo the small bolt that holds the sprocket and move the cam inside the points to set the timing. I have set up mags and other ignition timings on other bikes with no problem, but this has defeated me. The manuals don't seem to be a lot of help. Thanks in anticipation.

I’m a bit confused- not trying to be pedantic here but you can’t set the TDC - it is either 0 degrees or 360 degrees . I think you may mean 38 degrees BEFORE top dead center ( BTDC) . Make certain that you have done this on the compression stroke , not exhaust stroke .(both valves closed) If you have a manual advance then set the lever at full advance . If you have an auto advance unit then you must contrive something to hold it at advanced position ( if centrifugal device a washer to hold the weights out ) . My only experience is with a MagDyno on my ES2 . On this unit the mag shaft is tapered and the magneto  sprocket is plain , not keyed . You must loosen the nut and sprocket so that you can turn the mag shaft without turning the engine over . Set the piston in the correct position ( always by turning the crankshaft in its operating direction, never back and forth so as to eliminate the chance of a slightly different position due to lash .) Put a slip of the thinnest paper ( cigarette paper works ) between the points and gently pull on it . Turn the magneto shaft ( again, only in it’s operating direction) without turning the sprocket until you feel the points release the paper . Without disturbing the piston position and the magneto shaft position drive the sprocket home on the tapered shaft with a large socket or tube that can pass around the nut , then tighten the nut .If your mag is different the same system should apply - a continuity buzzer across the points will tell you when they start to open in the same manner as the paper slip will if it suits your system better.

Hope this helps - Richard

Sorry, quite right, 38 degrees BEFORE Top dead centre. What I am trying to time is a coil ignition distributor. The auto-advance seem to be under the points plate? I am not sure how you hold this open and whether you use the slotted screw on the cam to bring the points to the point of opening using a fag paper. I've timed magnetos and points in a Triumph timing case without a problem.

Get away from fag paper-after all who smokes now? I sell a mag timing device that shows an LED when the points open, Just as usable on an 18D1 (which you must have) but the other way is to connect an instrument lamp to the 'live' side of the points and turn the ignition on. Move the centre cam to full advance (by finger should be ok) and then you slacken and turn the 18D1 body with the points to ignition point. Assuming engine set to 38BTDC.
