ES2 cracked timing side casing

Forums

Hi, I have recent purchased an 1947 ES2, in bits. Have started a restoration. I currently have the tin work out for powder coating and spraying. In the meanwhile, I have noticed two hairline cracks in the timing side crankcase running through the casting from both camshaft bushes to the main bearing. I have attempted to repair but the aluminium is very porous and trying to stop the foot of the welds cracking has been at best problematic. As I am not 100% satisfied with the repair I would if possible like to source a replacement crankcase and even better a matched pair. The casting I require has the earlier type cam followers. Any joy on this would be appreciated.

The NOC Spares Scheme has a 1947 ES2 bottom end in stock under part number B4/6804. This consists of a matched pair of crankcases with the crank assembly and some other parts.

Or laser weld, contact EMP at Havant. This can lay down a 0.2mm bead of weld and cause no distortion in the process, leaving minimum removal of excess weld. Even in deep holes, if they can focus the laser they can weld.

Try T L Engineering in Bedford as they can do this sort of work on a cracked crankcase. The did the crack on my G12CSR crankcases, and that was a circle crack around the primary side of the crankcase.
