Oil check Norton Model 18

Forums

Hi I have a norton model 18, how much oil should the oil pan hold? How can i check the amount inside? Where should the level be with the engine switched off?

Thanks

Hi Cosimo - not sure what you mean by oil pan... if you mean the sump - the bottom of the crankcase - then the answer is there shouldn't be more than a cupful as it's a dry sump system. When the engine is running, oil will find its way to the bottom of the crankcase and the pump will suck it up and return it to the oil tank. When the engine is not running some oil from the tank may drip through the oil pump by gravity and end up in the sump. You'll see lots of talk on forums about the best way to cure this but if you leave the bike standing for weeks or months at a time this will generally happen. Personally I just take the drain plug out if I've left it for a while, collect the oil and put it back in the oil tank but there are other solutions.

If you mean the oil tank then it should be no less than half full but it's not critical as long as it's 3 or 4 centimetres lower than the hole in the return feed pipe.

... oil tank should be checked after the engine has run for a few minutes to allow what may have been in the crankcase to be returned.

But what year is your Model 18 as it may affect replies?
