1937 16H Carb?

Forums

What carb should be fitted to my 1937 Norton 16h (Civilian Model) please?

It has a 276 AE/1BE fitted, which I believe is a WD type - would this make any difference?

Thanks

Gary.

Hitchcocks list the Type 76 new. It can't be from Burlen, because they only list the 276.

The 76 has a set of pilot air inlet holes round the bottom.

The 276 was developed during 1936 for the WD16H which was being fitted for military use with an air filter. The 76 drew its pilot air via a series of drillings around the mixing chamber and the use of a filter at the main intake was therefore partially negated.

In theory, the types are interchangeable, but Matchless at least went back to the 76 after the war which may suggest that the earlier design gives better results where no filter is fitted.

The original WD16H mixing chamber was the 276/011 and this was a direct replacement for the earlier 76/011. The AE/1BE designation was the result of a wartime classification change to indicate settings and float chamber types (The 1BE is the float chamber).

The early Dommies also used a 76.

Richard...didn't you post pics of at least three jet blocks? So it's not a good idea to mix and match bodies and jet blocks between 76 and 276.
