restarting laid up engine

Forums

Hi all.

Looking for info, upon buying my commander I have stripped all the panels off prior to repainting haven’t decide on colour yet.

I have removed plugs and put oil in the cylinders and air cleaner ducting plenty of and revolved the back wheel in gear as advised by startright for the last couple of weeks

Today I have turned the engine over momentarily on the button with no strange noises ready to start hopefully next week if new air filters come does anybody know compatable number for them

What I need to know I have removed the fuel tank bit of water in but now removed im informed it works off vacuum can I fit a 1 ltr tank to start it or will to much fuel go in engine

Also how do you tell if oil pump is working correctly (on triumphs you can see it returning in tank but not on this) would I be better on starting usin 2t mix with fuel alla two stroke for lube and if so how much would you recommend

Any help appreciated

It's best to rotate the engine backwards otherwise the oil you have put in the plugs will go out the exhaust port.

You can use a 1ltr tank but if you haven't cleaned the carbs and the floats are stuck you will fill the engine with fuel washing away the the oil you have put in. Best to rebuild the carbs first before putting fuel through them.

The pipe I think you are talking about is the vacuum pipe that opens the diaphragm on the fuel tap and is fitted to the top of the inlet port on the right hand chamber with a rubber 90 degree elbow to plastic vacuum pipe.

If it's the one fitted directly to the back of the primary then it's the right hand end plate oil feed pipe and it has a 90 degree copper pipe to plastic pipe compression fitting. Do not run the engine without this fitted!

The oil pump is pretty good and they give little trouble. The oil system is a constant loss type so there won't be any oil returning to the oil tank. If you want to see if it's working before starting the engine you can remove the pump which is under the round cover on the gearbox. Note the direction the oil pump rotates and make yourself a coupling to match the oil pump drive tang that you can use in a battery drill. With the oil pump attached to the oil tank feed pipe spin the oil pump with the drill and oil should come out of the oil supply pipes or where the pipes fit.

Yes some pre-mix would be okay. You could try 1% which what I use when using my air cooled special on track.

If you are unsure about anything my advice is not to try starting the engine until you are sure everything is okay.

Hope this helps

Good luck

George

thanks for your reply george much appreciated was hoping to start this weekend but now delayed think im gonna go for may day have just ordered a service kit fot the su hif 4 carbs may as well service them if im gonna remove and strip down but in fairness i should have done this anyway so its geed me up and you are correct the pipe is to the tank both end perished but ive found pipe anyone know where these are avalable or compatable ones may be able to find some at work in my hydraulic fittings

also andy has chain gaiters for sale on ebay got a set they are quality

Hi Trevor

The best and only source for newly manufactured chain gaiters is NOC member Chris Harvey. He had new ones made up last year using a mould borrowed from Andover Norton. These are excellent quality made to the correct but better modern equivalent materials. He can be contacted at chris.harvey@ntlworld.com. Newly manufactured ones were unavailable for many years and old stock rubber ones, if available, are likely to have hardenned.
