Francis Beart, tank emblem.

Anyone know the story behind the emblem Francis Beart placed on his fuel tanks? It doesn’t seem to be mentioned anywhere.

cheers

Hi Jon,

Sorry I’m a bit late getting back to you on this. The emblem is a heraldic eagle as used on a coat of arms by an institution or dynasty. It looks to have a slightly naive style so might date from several centuries ago. Francis didn’t start using this until 1947 and continued until his involvement in Formula 500 car racing stopped him entering his own machines. When F500 faded in the late ‘50s Francis again entered his own machines but there was no evidence of the emblem being used again as far as I know. Francis attended Dulwich College and worked at Bristol Aero engines during the war years, but I can’t find any connection to the emblem. I think he might have used this to give his business some sort of gravitas, like a corporate image nowadays.

...thanks for the details. I read “Single Purpose” again after Xmas and it occurred to me that if is not mentioned.  The “green” and the “holes” all had mention but not the emblem. A curiosity to persue...

Thanks again

Jon
