ES2 Oil Pump gasket

Forums

I apologise for what is probably a very naive question but here goes:  1949 ( or possibly 1950 ) ES2 engine; Is there any gasket to be fitted behind the oil pump? I think not and there isn't one showing in my parts list but I just can't find the definitive answer anywhere.

My understanding is that the singles and early twins did not have a gasket behind the oil pump mating face. Instead a smear of non-hardening sealant was advised.

I made an oil-pump gasket for my engine as I was not too confident that the respective mating faces were still flush with one another after 70 yars of usage..

My 1936 Model 18 extravagantly wet sumped until I fitted a gasket behind the oil pump. To the point where I had to drain the sump prior to every outing. I fitted one and now it doesn't. I'm the first to admit that I don't quite understand why.
