lay down gearbox oil leak

Forums

l have a 1956 es2 laydown gearbox which is leaking oil from the kick start shaft  and have an x ring oil seal to fit, looking at the manuals they don't show any oil seal and how to fit one,   Norvils site they advise to fit with rtv sealant has anyone fitted one of these

Firstly I would replace the K/S shaft bush A2/364 Then on the inside of the inner cover machine enough of the bush away to fit the seal. Also check the K/S shaft for wear and build it up with bronze or get it metal sprayed and re machine it. Good Luck.

Bill's solution may be best but it's not possible without the machinery. And when I once tried to remove the bush, I gave up.

I use an x ring and it's far better than o ring. I filled the groove behind the ring with silicone and assembled it. The groove is too big for the ring otherwise. In fact I did buy the 'correct' o ring some years earlier, and that was a loose fit also. I don't know if it' was the wrong size or if the box is wrong but I don't believe it is.

Have others had the same issue? Is the ring (x or o) always supposed to be glued in?
