As reported some time ago, I have since acquiring my 1956 Dominator 99 frequently had problems engaging top gear and it seemed to have a mind of it's own. For the first time I removed the cam plate detent plunger for inspection and it was obvious as to what was contributing to the problem. The fit of the plunger into the screwed housing was a real ' ball in a bucket fit '. The excessive clearance was allowing the plunger to rock from side to side as well as moving vertically thus preventing a precise location into the cam plate.
Having replaced the duff unit , the gear change into top is significantly improved as would be expected in addition to a crisper change in the other gears.

Glad it is fixed, I have a lay-down box, in some stuff I bought, but it is not period for the rest of the build, unless I defy convention!
