Severe wet sumping

Hi. I am a new member with a 57 Model 50.  Among many issues my main concern is severe wet sumping.  I will typically have to drain 1/2 to a pint of oil  every week or so.  I leave it in compression stroke but this does not seem to help.   It has not run for a while which I am in the process of sorting.  I have not had the engine apart but I do not know if the previous owner has left something out after an engine overall.   Any ideas.

After a layoff I have to drain off about 2litrs , I don't worry ,its only oil.If using the bike weekly I just amble along for a mile till it pumps up. The way I see it,having extra oil in the sump allows the crank to pick it up and give the cam/followers/ piston skirts a good splash on start up!.The best solution is to ride every week.

Hi Mark, welcome to the Club. If only 1/2 pint has drained out there should be no problem in starting the bike and as Robert says the circulation of the oil will do the sump draining for you. If most or all of the oil has gone from the tank then it would be best to drain it from the sump and re-use. Many people fit an anti drain valve but if it is a manual one and you forget to turn it on the consequences are serious. Wear in the oil pump increases wet sumping although the wear will not affect oil circulation unless it is very worn. as long as the oil is circulating, which you can see by looking into the oil tank, then inspection of the pump is only worth doing when the engine is requiring other work.

Thanks all for your replies. I am the type to forget turning on a stop tap so I think I will live with it as suggested.

I would consider that to be in as new condition.

Doesn't seem to be a problem to me.

If you start the bike and let it idle while you are putting on your riding gear, by the time you are ready to go, the bike will be ready to go also.

Hello Mark

i fitted a mick hemming anti wet sumping device, basically a check valve. When you fit it Make sure it’s the rt way round arrow to the pump then you need to drain the sump and prime the In feed pipe from the tank after the valve. This will ensure the oil gets sucked through the valve and feed the pump kick the bike a few times with the plug out. Once this is done engine started it will take a few second to come back to tank Via return pipe. I always check in the oil tank to make sure oil Is returning you know then oil is getting through.

i have never had any wet sumping and always works it’s a good device.
