Crankcase oil feed union bolt thread

Forums

Hi Chaps,

Hope you are all snuggled up in the garage, safe and well.

The bolt of the crankcase oil feed union on my 650SS is not holding torque - must be stripped. Anybody know the thread size so I can get the appropriate helicoil kit? I believe it is 5/16"W - anyone confirm this and tpi?

Many thanks.

hello the oil pipe fitting  stud in the crankcase is  5/16th Whitworth and you need a recoil kit from Tracey tools  you need to drill it out and retap then fit the recoil  then your back to 5/16s  and you have to remove your engine to do this operation  these recoils are very good as I have used one  from Tracey Tools   hope this may help you    yours  anna J

Thanks Anna, I believe standard 5/16"W is 18 tpi so will go for that helicoil kit. I realise it's a bit of a job to do, which is a bit annoying as I've just rebuilt the bike! It seemed fine when I installed it so don't really understand how this happened. Hey-ho. Cheers, Len

Thanks chaps.

Interesting that BSW helicoil sets are £30 but modern, metric and others are only £10. Economies of scale, I guess?

Anyway, on closer inspection, the original bolt, which I had mindlessly refitted, was a little short (which is why it had stripped) and there was a reasonable thread length beyond it so I found a longer  bolt and it seems to have done the trick. That was one of the April fools life threw at me yesterday. The other was a leaky central heating pump joint. So my 5 hours in the garage yesterday got me back to where I started. However, all of that was better than taking the bike to bits again. Result!

The 650 engines after 114870 had a different arrangement for the oil junction block fastener. Changing from a sleeve nut to a shouldered bolt. p/n 030448. But still 5/16" WW thread.

These can be obtained from Norvil or A/N. The latter for some reason charging nearly 3 times more for a fitting that looks poorly finished.

By E/N 116372 the oil juction block itself had changed to having all its holes in a line. A shape that continued to be used up through the Commando range. Albeit with varying hose connection ends. Attachment shows later block.

Mine is the later one with the three holes in a line,  as  your photo.

All sorted now, hopefully.

Cheers,

Len
