Removing centre stand on 1960 Dominator 99

Forums

I need to remove the centre stand for repair/refurbishment. It looks like the whole primary chaincase/clutch/alternator have to be removed to allow one of the fixing bolts to be removed. Is there any alternative way of doing this job?

hello Mike - Unfortunately if the centre-stand through-bolt is fitted on the drive-side,  passing from the inner primary chaincase through the stand bolt and through the engine plate, then the primary chaincase outer cover has to be removed to remove and replace the bolt.  It is for this reason that many bikes are being ridden about without this nut and bolt fitted.  Sometimes the nut can be removed and the bolt pushed into the chaincase sufficiently to loosen the inner stand nut. The right-hand through-bolt is easily removed and once the right-hand centre-stand nut is removed the bolt can be pushed out to let the right-hand pivot on the stand to hang free. Then with a bit  of a juggle the stand can be pulled free from the left-hand bolt.  Of course to remove and replace the through bolt the outer cover has to be removed.  I have run my bikes around quite satisfactorily without the through bolt on the left-hand mounting.  If you do so it's best to add a little thread lock the the nut on the stand bolt when you tighten it on the lug.  Do not leave the through-bolt loose inside the chaincase when you run the bike having replaced your stand.  I once did so because I'd forgotten it was still in there following a repair.  Big mess !!   Good Luck , howard

Hi. I’ve been following this thread with interest as I’m building a 1960 99 from several boxes of parts. I’ve got the original 1960 and 1961 parts books but neither of them show the ‘through bolts’ for the centre stand. My stand mounting bolts are hollow stainless so I can see that it would be possible to insert a through bolt but I was wondering if those bolts were a later modification? What is the purpose of the through bolts - are the nuts on them supposed to be used as lock nuts against the nuts of stand mounting bolts?

Thanks

Hi Tony - i suppose that the through bolts act as another stiff point securing the bottom of the engine plate to the frame.   As they are tightened they pull the plate against the inner face of the stand bolts such  that if the stand bolt nut loosens, with the rotating motion of putting the bike on and off the stand, then the stand bolt is held in place by the through bolts, washers and nuts.  All the Dominators I have worked on have had the through bolts fitted at some time or other.  The rear engine plates have all had the hole pre-drilled even though some have had the left-hand one omitted.  I am not sure about the bolt-up framed models (88 De-Luxe)  but I shall check my parts books and seek out a part number for them.    Cheers, howard

Hi Howard. Thanks for that. I hadn’t considered the frame stiffening function of the through bolts. I like the idea of inserting the right-hand one but leaving the left-hand one out to aid subsequent removal of the stand, should the need arise.

Hello again Tony - I've had a look through my parts lists and you're correct they are neither shown nor listed in the parts manuals. How strange that is ? - nevertheless they were fitted and serve a purpose even if we prefer that left-hand one is omitted.  Cheers, howard

Hi Mike, Your question reminded me of an article I had in Roadholder no 371 (Nov 2018), and a reply (of many) by Philip Field in Jan 2019 No 373. I believe you should bite the bullet and fit the bolts (p/n 18649, and nut -T2017) even though it will require the chaincase to be removed!

In my opinion they prevent flex on the engine/gearbox unit, and if not fitted the only fixings are at each end of the engine plates ……...Why would Norton have bothered fitting a hole in the stand bolts and a corresponding hole in the engine plates if not for this, …..even my slimline M50 has them and it is a lot less powerful than the twins, (although I still prefer it!), Many people do not bother to fit the bolts!

Regards John (Missing Bolt) O
