Bottom yoke size question (or problem)

Forums

Hi.

I’m fighting with my 1960 Dommie 99 basket case. It’s looking more and more like I’ve bought a collection of various bike bits rather than parts that have some kind of relationship to one another.

The latest issue seems to be the lower yoke of the front forks. I was about to purchase a head race adjuster nut but when I looked at the RGM web site it says that those nuts are available in 1 inch and 1+1/8 diameter forms. It also says that Featherbed frames use the 1 inch version (the other sized one being used on pre-featherbed frames). I went and measured the steering stem on my lower yoke and it’s only 13/16 inch (20mm). There is a 1” wide by 1/2 inch high ‘collar’ at the base of the stem that a bearing fits over. So is my lower yoke not correct - that’s what I’m thinking because neither head race nut seems to be the correct diameter. The stanchion spacing is the correct 7 inches between centres. Is my lower yoke from a smaller capacity bike? Any help gratefully received as I’m totally confused about what I’ve got.

Thanks

Tony

That lower yoke looks like it came from an N15CS, or from one of the G15, series of bike, as those ones had the bottom part cut away. It would work, but it does not have the extra parts on the lower yoke for the fork stops, to contact the bracket on the front of the frame. This may and could mean the handle bars denting your petrol tank.

Hi Anthony,

Thanks for the reply. My bottom yoke has two lugs cast into the underside and they strike against the steering damper bracket, which provides the steering lock stop function. The damper bracket bolts to the front of the frame (on the plate welded across the two down tubes) and locates into the fork stem from the underside of the yoke.

regards

Tony
