Dominator 99 pushrods

Forums

As I am close to completing  the rebuild of the top end of my 1956 Dominator 99 engine , I need to replace the damaged pushrods and I have carefully checked the rocker geometry using a home made adjustable pushrod. This indicates that I need a variation of lengths from standard in particular one exhaust pushrod. Andover Norton do not supply the standard lengths although RGM do supply a diy long pushrod with a separate end piece.

Can anybody recommend an alternate supplier ? Also I understand that there are ‘ fat and thin ‘ ones so which are correct for the 1956 Dominator 99 ?

My first concern would be "Why should the lengths be different?"'   Pushrods would be of standard lengths, when the engine was built.   Something must have worn, or distorted, if they now do not adjust correctly.   Has the bottom end been stripped down?   Worn camshaft could be the problem.

The barrel had been reduced in height by a previous owner and I had the head very lightly skimmed . In addition the valve seats have been recut. I have not stripped the bottom end down and the rebored barrel is now in position awaiting pushrods.  Is it possible to check the cam for wear with the barrel in position ?  It still begs the question as to where can I obtain standard push rods from ?

You can make an attempt by putting a dial gauge on each cam follower in turn. With care and a degree disc you can plot the profile, or just measure the lift.and compare. The 'Atlantic Green' site publishes lots of Norton twin cam profiles.

With an engine that's had modifications as yours had ,its pointless to get stuck on std parts. Just make it work .  The club often has 99 rods for the later 99 motors , it sounds like you will need to shorten these. As long as the rockers clear the head and the valve geometry looks good. The valve springs may not allow maximum revs but are you going there anyway?, Our Atlas had sunken seats which had to be re profiled. I was concerned about geometry too, but it turns out The Std geometry was poor anyway and was corrected on later motors I have achieved the same effect!.

George,

My 1956 Dominator uses the thin push rods.

I hope that helps.

Hi George......checkout the attachment and let me know if this is what you are after. These pushrods came out of a 99 engine I owned and dismantled a few years ago. The rods are actually identical length pairs; the photo is distorted by the camera angle.
