16" Norton pump?

16" Norton pump?

Hello everyone and a very merry Christmas to you all.

Just an obscure fact I need answering. This is a picture of a 16" tyre pump. Can anyone tell me what it is off. I fits my Wideline tank. Does it fit anything else?

The writing on the barrel reads Norton Motors Ltd. Birmingham and on the handle Britannia. Is it genuine?

Any help greatly appreciated.

I can't enlarge the image.

The WD16H manual shows a 'Britannia' pump - marked 'British' on the other side of the handle, but life is complicated as the Britton family seem to have fallen out and the two sides went their own way as Britton and Britannia...Norton appear to have continued purchasing from both...The singles had a 15" pump..16" would seem to be wideline featherbed and later bikes had a 14" pump (I think)...

Apex pumps are frequently faked for Nortons and Brittons for Vincents but I'm not aware that the Norton link is generally known so it's probably pukka.

Does it have the 45° outlet stub ?

...By your knowledge Richard, a valued forum contributor. I learn something every time I read one of your posts.

Thanks for the reply Richard. No it does not have the 45 degree out let.

Thank you again

Thanks Emlyn, the angled outlet was characteristic of the pre-war / wartime Brittons and Britannias but my research reduces into the 1950s which is why new info is always good...and thanks for the vote of confidence Jon. I'm not certain that all this rivet-countery is necessarily a positive thing but I seem to have become addicted to it.

Grace's Guide with its focus on the Birmigham manufacturers of the first half of the 20th Century has become my second home. How I wish that I had asked Peter Roydhouse (and good old John Hudson) more when I still had the chance.

Best Wishes to all as we approach 2020 and who knows what restrictions on the oily smelly infernal combustion-propelled motorcycles that we care so much about.

Hi Richard,

My 1957 Dominator came with a pump when I bought it in 1962 so I can only surmise that it is original. If you are collecting data mine certainly has the 45 degree outlet.

I can check the manufacturer etc. tomorrow if you wish.

Richard

If possible, with a couple of photos, Richard. These aspects have never been fully documented and the available clues are fewer in number each year...

Hi Richard,

Apologies for the delay, the festivities got in the way.

Attached are 3 photographs, one of the handle end (somewhat out of focus, I will take another when I can), one of the stamping in the middle of the barrel and one of the whole pump.

The handle wordings are "Made in England" at the top, "APEX" in the middle with half a union flag at each end, then "Inflator Co. Ltd." at the bottom. All of this is on the handle twice at opposite sides and are moulded.

The wording on the barrel is "APEX Inflator Co. Ltd.", "THAPEX" middle and "Made in England" bottom.. The barrel markings are stamped and one side only.

Hope this helps with the documentation,

Regards

Richard
