Wideline seat photo

Forums

Anyone out there have a photo of the underside of a wideline seat,I cannot find it in any of the Norton manuals.

Peter's seat is basically identical to my own (on a 1954 "88"). However, a previous owner has removed the studs, and braised wing nuts on to them, which are poked up from below. I have used both fixing methods, both are a bit fiddly, as location is by feel.

On the subject of fiddly fitting, I found that it was marginally less so by soldering large washers onto the base of the wing nuts, as on the photo attached,as this makes it easier feeling for the seat stud. I have three wideline seats, two of which I know to be ex-Leighton's. Surprisingly these are all 5/16" UNF thread. Having lost one of the original wing nuts I have subsequently acquired various antique mickeymouse-ear styled ones off Ebay, usually BSW, and then sleavedand threaded these UNF. I guess the originals would have been BSCY 26 tpi ?

Is this of any help ?

Thanks for that,my seat looks the same but when I removed the cover I found a hole at the front and someone had cut two slots about 2" in on either side of the hole and bent it upwards? They also pop riveted 2 1/2" tubes on the underside of the seat to fit the spikes on the front of the slimline!!

Thanks again

for your help

I lost one wing nut too but found an original replacement before I bought a Leighton's seat. Disappointed to find it had UNF studs!frown You went the hard way! UNF wing nuts aren't difficult to find in stainless steel at shows etc. Otherwise Leighton's seat was spot-on. The rexine/vinyl covering is obviously from the original rollers and the red piping is correct with its textured finish. All the others I've seen have a poor copy of the coverings and red piping is usually the smooth modern vinyl.

Old guitarists might know that the amp coverings from the 1960s are often still available from the original manufacturers - as long as you give them an order for about 1000yds! They keep the rollers, unlike motorbike factories who scrap everythging when they fold!
