Manx Reassembling the bevel

Forums

Reassembling my first Manx engine, who could tell me in which way does the engine run.

Good, thank you.

Sorry I can't remember his name, but to help me with the reassembly, someone here sent me a copy of pages numbered Auriga..... 3, Auriga..... 4 etc...

At point 15 and 21 on Auriga..... 5, it describes the cylinder head and rocker box fitting with the contact breakers points as reference. And it's the same for the bevel housing and vertical shaft refitting. But I don't have them mounted.

Will it be OK if I just put the engine on TDC?

Hi Christian,

When removing the cambox, set engine to TDC with both valves closed, remove bevel cover and make a note or photograph any alignment marks on bevels so you will know on re-assembly. Don't forget, the camshaft revolves anti-clockwise.

Hi Richard,

The engine has been completely disassembled, marks have been done. And washed away while cleaning. Things that happen on long term project :)

If it ends on the wrong TDC the magneto sprocket will need to come off to re-time it.  Or it won't start and will probably backfire excitingly.
Not a catastrophe.  Just a nuisance.
I am referring to Inters and Manx with Oldham coupling bevel drive shaft, which could end up reversed.  Did late Manx have a different drive shaft with splines?  That would be a mystery to me.

If its just the magneto sprocket to be moved for timing it, no worries.

The mark I put on the drive shaft, indicating the top side, is still there. The motor on the workbench has Oldham couplings, still very tight on each side.

The bevels have dots to show the correct mesh position.  One dot on one tooth and two dots on the corresponding pair of teeth on the other bevel. They can't wash off.  But can be difficult to see and temporary spots of white paint might be useful (can't now remember...).

1940 - 1949 section has a maintenance manual for cammy Nortons.  you should find all you need there.  You will also find documents in the TECHNICAL Tab under Singles. The Singles Compendium has great articles from Roadholder on specific models. Then there are factory tuning notes which will also cover your motor.
If you are struggling with information i will point you in the right direction.  Make sure you set the gap on the oldhams properly.

Thank you for that, I'll have a deep look over there to complete what I already have.
