TLS Stiffening Plate

Forums

I have a commando that I am recommissioning. The front shoes have been contaminated and need changing. I have a new set to go in and while I am at it, I will be adding a stiffening kit to the assembly. I believe there is a pivot pin to drill out and the new one to rivet/peen in.

I was wondering if anyone could advise on the best way to rivet the new pivot pin in place?

Your experiences would be appreciated as food for thought.

The new pivot pin is a devil to rivet in - I know from experience.

In the end I made a tool for my SDS drill and it worked perfectly.  I sacrificed an SDS chisel point by grinding it off to a stump about 2" long, I then ground a sort of mushroom shape (rounded) to the end to fit into the pivot.  A bit of lube on the mushroom part and few mins of action with the drill with the back part of the pivot on an improvised anvil and it was done.

I'll see if I can find the tool I made and post a picture of it.

A pic of the sds tool I made.  I don't think you'll be able to rivet it manually as it takes a lot of force to spread the pivot.  You are welcome to borrow the tool if you can't make one yourself - but you would need an sds drill - if you pm me your address.

SDS Riveting tool 1

Thanks for that! That’s a brilliant idea! I never throw anything away tool wise, and have all sort of bits and bobs of broken sds stuff! I will give it a try!

Thanks for the idea!
