Tick-over slow to settle down

Forums

I'm sure other people will have had this problem, My model 50 (1960..Slimline) is sometimes reluctant to settle in to a slow tickover when say stoping at lights etc...the problem is it does'nt always do this only about 50% of the time!

The carb is fairly new, cables are not fouling anything, and the slide seems to 'snap' closed when the twist grip is closed. the jets are all as standard, but I have lowered the needle to it's lowest position to try and weaken the mixture, as it used to run very rich. Spark plug is now brown on the electrode, but a bit sooty round edge.........I think mixture is about spot on. Could auto advance on distributor be a factor?

Any assistance/advice please

Although the throttle slide snaps down when the engine isn't running, could it be that it is not shutting instantly when the engine is running? A bit of wear on the slide could cause this. The other possibility is weak distribuor springs leaving the engine over-advanced at tickover - which makes the engine race a bit.

Hello there,

On Japanese multi cylinder bikes the usual cause of hanging on the throttle is an air leak on the induction side. I have never had this problem with an Amal carb on a British bike but it could be worth checking that the carb/manifold O ring is sealing properly.

Many thanks gentlemen, I'll try your sugestions, but it could be about a week or so as I am waiting for my wheels to be re-built. I will replace the distributor springs first, so I can eliminate one thing at a time.(I would imagine they are the original ones!)

Don't forget to oil the shaft and pivots.

Many thanks to all, I obtained new springs via another message and the problem has been solved, it now ticks over nearly as steady as my previously owned Panther! I bought two sets but as the last lot were probably the originals....(54 years old!) I may not need them in my lifetime...I now only need to cure the slight oil leak from the rockerbox and the bike is finished..........for now.
