Taxing an MOT exempt machine

Forums

Dear Members,

This morning I received my V11 road tax renewal reminder from the DVLA for my 1953 Inter upon which it stated that I had to produce an insurance certificate (OK) plus a valid MoT.

I went to my local Post Office with all the documentation plus a V112, Declaration of Exemption from MoT, category"O".

The post mistress then simply overrode the DVLA computer and issued me with my tax disc. Hey Presto sometimes the system works!

As usual I received my Norton Big 4âs road tax renewal notice, so on 8th Jan went on the DVLA web site to order my Historic Vehicle tax disc. I went through the normal procedure as I do with all my bikes but this time it told me DVLA canât confirm whether the bike has a current MOT and instantly cancelled the application. My Big 4âs MOT was due to expire on 29th Jan so itâs not valid when the new Tax disc starts on 1st Feb. This bike is made pre-1960 so a MOT is no longer required, I got straight on the phone.

The nice Welsh lady at DVLA checked her records, apologized and told me they are having âissuesâ with the online renewal system when bikes still have a current MOT. She advised me to renew my Road Tax Licence at a suitable Post Office.

So thatâs technology for you.

10th Jan I called in the Post Office. I explained the situation to the Postmaster and he seemed to be totally confused. He went through the motions of issuing a new Tax disc, looking at his desktop screen with a puzzled look he said it says here âno information available for a valid MOTâ. He wrote out the TAX disc and said âthis technology obviously doesnât work for Pre-1960 historic vehicles.
