Tank replacement???

hello Norton Wideline and slimline Indian made tanks are Not made to the original patents there for bad fitting and slimline are bad fitting and do not have bolt mounts underside of the tank but the metal is a good thickness its a shame they try to get the tank in the right proportions and to fit the frame in the correct way , yours anna j

I'm pretty sure that thetanks for the new Nortons are made in house, or they were the last time I visited.

As for the Indian tanks, it seems that you can pick up a good Roadster tank, but Interstatescan be something of a disaster. Mine was appalling, (dents, leaks and badly fitting cap)and was eventually sent back. I lost the postage costs when the supplier refused to accept it after telling me to return it. I had to tell the Customs dept in India to junk it, otherwise they were going to send it back and charge me the postage. PayPalrefunded me the cost of the tank, but be very aware that just as some people have a 'delightful' experience, it can all go horribly wrong.

I doubt very much if R.E have their tanks made by the samebunch that made my Interstate, but you never know.

It isn't just the tank itself, it can be the whole experience.

India is quite a large country, and, obviously there are many companies who are cashing in, on the demand for "Classic" bike parts. To a lesser extent, the same is happening in the U.K. There are just as many "Rubbish" parts on sale, from U.K. suppliers, as there are from India.

My Wideline tank is an almost perfect copy, of the original. O.K., the front mounting rubbers required slight re-positioning, as the tank just touched the frame, at the front. There is no U.K. supplier of a similarly quality tank, at a reasonably affordable price. A pity they do not make pattern exhaust systems too. The "Peardrop" silencers, available now, sound nothing like the originals.

It is my understanding that the India production Royal Enfield is a continuation of the plant established long ago by Royal Enfield proper - whereas the UK production ceased the India operation soldiered on to this day . They are therefore not a reproduction but the real thing. I would assume as such that the tanks are stampings and perhaps even from original dies .

Regarding the various repro tanks made in India - Norton and otherwise - it has been my understanding that many are literally beaten out by hand . If indeed this is so , it would certainly explain the wide variation in quality- fit , finish , shape etc. Perhaps the tanks that some have had good experiences with are from a serious maker with a considerable investment-actually die stamped and therefore more care was taken to insure accuracy and uniformity.

Richard, My tank was supplied by Royal Enfield King. Whether their tanks are made "In House", or contracted out, is not relevant. The quality is superb.

Thanks John - That is good to know as I have a Dommie project in the future and may need a tank .

I can see where some confusion may enter here between Royal Enfield ( as mentioned by OP in opening post ) and Royal Enfield King ( tank maker/supplier)
