Tank cover

At the Norton Festival I saw a Slimline fitted with a petrol tank cover. If the owner reads this could he let me know the source or any one else who knows.Have tried the usual search engines and got the usual rubbish.

Many thanks Ron Milton

Hi Ronald,

I have a black vinyl tank cover on my Slimline 99/650, I bought the first many, many years ago from Tector Tank Covers, of Lochgoilhead Scotland, but they no longer exist, so when I needed a replacement, I took my spare tank to a traditional furniture upholsterer and showed him a picture of what I wanted. The bespoke one he made me was better than the first one, by a good bit. That was 15 years ago now and I'm looking to replace it again, there is a place in Preston which does car seats and custom seats for chops, I'm going to try them.

AFAIK no-one makes them off the shelf anymore for our bikes, good luck.

Cheers,

Niall

Hi Ron,

Bootleg Bikeseats in Preston, had a look at my old one and quoted me £35 using that as a pattern, obviously, working from scratch to a bare tank would take much longer and cost in proportion, if badges are required, I supply them, this is not what they do, they mostly do chopper seats. They are doing me a dommie seat with a snakeskin top, so I persuaded them to do me a tank cover. The problem with slimline tanks is that there are at least three different top pressings, not including the small US one, all with different filler positions, so a cover made off my pattern would not necessarily fit yours, I suggest you find a local car or furniture upholsterer and see what they say.

They are very busy and I have to take my job in at the end of September, I will post a picture when fitted to a bike.

Cheers,

Niall

Hello Niall, thanks for your reply's, it was a long shot but I thought that someone may have one laying around unused.

I realized that there were at least two different slimline tanks with the filler cap changing from one side to the other and a different radius on the front bottom corner.

Anyway on second thoughts I have thought about this modern petrol should it get between the two, it would be too late by the time the cover could be taken off ! Regards Ron
