Swinging arm oil alert

Forums

Tim Stockdale"s advice to check gearbox oil forGL-4/5" ness had me checking out the top shelf (not for the first time). As it happens the gear box oil was O.K but the 85/140 swinging arm oil was GL -5. Is it just as deadly in my cotter converted 850 Mk2a?Thanks for the input Alec

The chance of any oil in a Commando swing-arm pivot

a) getting anywhere near the bushes

b) staying there long enough to do any damage

is so slight that I wouldn't worry about it. If the bushes knacker and seem to have degraded then you can try something different next time.

I have a suspicion that in gearboxes, the oil causes bronze bushes to erode and become brittle but it doesn't seem to cause catastrophic failure and the bushes still do their job.I've stripped boxes where bushes that should have gone in as solid bronze have come out looking more like oilite.

The Glacier Design Engineers handbook on use of bushes covers the GL4/5 problem and recommends use of GL4 when the oil temp is likely to exceed 100C when using leaded bronze bushes. Not even a Norton Gearbox let alone a swingarm is running at 100C. It is a non problem.
