Hi Maurice

I had the same trouble with my 1949 ES2 .The carb was completly worn out with the result of weakening the mixture. Bought a new carb for £278 ,now perfect running. Well worth it.

If its a worn carb I'd send it to Martin Bratby. I sent the TT carb from my inter to him and that runs great now. He does a lovely job and if you tell him what it's for he'll make sure it's got all the right jets etc in it. He also did the carbs of my dads BSA and they came back very nice as well.

Is cheaper than a new carb but last time I spoke to him he had quite a long waiting time.

Did you clean out the pilot jets properly - by taking the entire jet block out? I had similar on my side valve and that transformed it. At first it would only tick over with air slide down. No cost.

Possible causes:

weak mixture

bad ignition timing

bad valve timing

bad valve clearances

bent valve

valve stuck in guide

Have you checked the compression? Does your bike have a mag/dyno or an alternator?

You'll have to eliminate them one at a time I'm afraid.

My 1946 model 18 did exactly the same. It was a worn carb slide, one minute weak the next too rich. Just get onto Surrey cycles and buy a new carb then all your troubles will be gone. Yes they are £270 but you will cure it with no messing or guessing
