Speedo replacement

The grey face magnetic speedo on the Atlas needs a service,There are cheap pattern replacements on the market that are a fraction of the cost of the service, has anyone tried one?.

A refurb on the clock qouted at £180 got me thinking, just have a go!, Levered off the bezel removed needle, casing and face, protected the meters and sprayed through the magnet and ally disc with contact cleaner ,pulled a few strips of paper between them and put it all back. Works fine now, bezel is a bit tatty so put that on the list for next time. Back to the clutch next,Think i know why neutral is hard to get, The plate thats bolted to the back of the clutch center has a bit of a wobble ,someone has been levering against it to get it off the shaft. Not me --honest.

Robert. I don't know why the refurb quote was so expensive. Phil Woods in Littlehampton, who advertises in OBM etc, did a grey faced pair for my 650ss earlier this year. He serviced both, including re-calibration, exchange resprayed cases, plus new bezel on one, for £45 & £65 + postage. You obviously have done a good job on yours, but it is refitting the bezel which requires the special tool in order to look as original. Also the recalibration is useful. His number is 01903 724509......

Thats usefull Ian, We will see if the speedo works ok for a while. The one on the 99 has a screwed on bezel. I will be giving that a bit of amature attention soon,

The screwed on bezels were much more user friendly, but no doubt fell foul of the bean-counters, being more expensive to produce than a plain rolled-on one, no doubt. OK until you have to get them off!

Phil seems happy to do as much or as little to them as you require, so he would no doubt just fit a new rim. P&P adds a bit, but I dropped mine into him when I was in Sussex visiting reli's at Christmas, so only had the return cost, which was £15 for the two.

His father has done some for me in the past, but I believe he is semi-retired now, and just plays with the expensive stuff, Vincent 6" speedo's and the like.

Easy way to remove screwed-on bezel: two Jubilee clips: one on the bezel and one on the body. Screw body portions side by side so a screwdriver can just be wedged between them. Then lever one against the other. Repeat a couple of time and they come apart easily...

Fair point, Howard. My apologies David, I read it that you had misunderstood the point being made.

Your method brings with it quite a risk of damaging the finish though, particularly with a jubilee clip around the body, which will dig nicely into the paint. You could wrap plastic tape around it, but the clip could still dig through. I am sure anyone using that method will proceed with caution.

To answer your original question , pattern clocks have been around for a while I bought a pair from rgm 5 years/ 7500 miles ago - no problems except they aren't original, More recently bought an Indian one for other bike seems Ok came with special cable as speedp end is larger no issues so far but only 400 miles. I see there are ones available for as little as £12 with original cable fitting,so my advice ( from the philistine camp ) is sell your broken chronometrics on a well known site and buy 4 with the cash!

I should have said, I replaced my pair of cheap imported clocks with the refurbished grey faced magnetic originals, for reasons of originality. The imported ones have a different drive ratio to the standard ones; or at least mine did; which meant getting a different drive gearbox for both the speedo and rev counter, but I now have correct clocks, which look right, so I am happysmiley! I can sell you a set of clocks, complete with correct drive gearboxes for them.....

We can put Tiawanese clocks, Japanese carbs, electronic ignition, belt drives, self-starters, disc brakes, hydraulic clutches etc on our old bikes, in order to make them not the bike we were attracted to in the first place....

light blue touch paper and stand well back!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the speedo will carry on working,My reccollection from back in the day was that even from new the magnetic clocks were no where near as reliable as the chrono's. Certainly the one on my 60 99dl has never been serviced and works fine, Must be due for a clean and lube.I'll tell you how i get on with it.
