Am I right in thinking that the gearbox oil is introduced via the oval cover plate on the outer cover? My Franks book from 1949 only shows the earlier box with the filler to the rear of the main casting.
That's right, Ian. The le…

I don't seem to have a level plug, just a drain plug!
I'm not sure about the bolt and allen screw in the last picture......
That picture of the drain plug reminds me I must shorten the stand bolts!

Having looked at lots of pictures I'm now fairly sure the allen screw is in fact the level plug. I've unscrewed it and there was some oil on the inner end (bike on prop stand). It does seem to be a very fine thread - looks like 5/16" Cycle although I didn't check it. Would this be the thread for what I now understand would be a square headed (why?) correct level plug?

ps have just realised I didn't mention that this is a 1952 ES2 with a laydown box. No idea why I put the question in "Heavy Twins".
According to my Dominator 99 parts book the part number is 13765 although when I look this up on line it comes back as a drain plug with a hex head.

Part number for the level plug is 13765 according to my 1955 parts list. Drain plug is E3336.

Hello Ian . photo of the level plug and showing that mine hasn't got the hole / passage in the position shown. to pass oil to gearbox that some have. so the outer case would probably take a bit of oil before it passes through into the box yours may differ

In that case, I'm out of my depth! Seems like you have found the correct (placement) of the level plug anyway. Good luck!

Many thanks Barry, that confirms that the allen screw on mine is in fact the level plug. It's quite a pretty little component so may just leave it as it is. I see the square headed item doesn't have a head to seal against the casting so I assume it just seals by virtue of tightening up against the inner end of the threaded hole.

Ian . does that mean mine…
Ian . does that mean mine is plug ugly. thats where the level plug is. but the oil level is further up from that. if you push something into the level hole it should just hit a dead end as the oil gallery travels at 90 deg vertical from there up to the oil level hole inside the gear box casing. if you know what i mean. unless yours has been modified.

Hi Barry.
So the actual level is higher in the box than the plug and is governed by the other end of the gallery you mention? That's ingenious as it means the plug won't be constantly submerged so less likely to leak.

That's right, Ian. The level plug is on the back of the gearbox about halfway up.
