Roadholder seal removal

I have a pair of roadholders and want to change the seals, the problem is that the seal holders seems to be screwed down into the forks, when I look down into where the seals are there is something which I assume is a seal holder,it has two holes one either side which I assume is for a special spanner to screw the seal holder out,is this correct or can I just pull the stanchions up with force to remove the seals?

Thanks

The seal holder is screwed into the bottom boot. RH thread. To unscrew you will need a peg spanner or ground down C spanner or a tight fitting peg that can be drifted round plus......................loads of heat.

A good soaking the night before with a releasing agent can help but beware of the fumes and fire hazard. Sometimes the bits unscrew from each other with the likes of a rubber oil filter wrap around belt. Even a leather belt has been known to do the trick.

Avoid using a wrench as it will just crush the seal holder and ruin the finish.

Thanks for the reply Phil but its not the top seal holder that you refer to that I have the problem with, its after you take this seal holder off and look down where the seals should be,there seems to be a washer with two holes in it which would need a special tool to reach down and unscrew.??

Thanks

Hi are they short or long roadholders.

Sorry, I was away, the forks are short roadholders.

There is nothing between the screw in retainer and the seal in my forks, are you sure you are not looking at the back of the seal?

I have a pair of roadholders which do not have this ,all I did to remove the seals was to remove the seal holder and slide the stanchion out complete with seals?I wish this was the same with the other pair!
