I've just bought a new spring from the NOC shop for therear stand on my 1935 ES2. Can anyone tell me how to fit it. It is so strong there is no way I can stretch it with a conventional puller.
Or should I just start eating spinach.......

I remember it being a real pain in the arse too. I can't remember exactly how I rigged it but I ended up using a ratchet strap and some strong wire through the eyelet on spring that could be cut after fitting. I may have even had one end of the strap attached to the workbench so I could get the exact angle I was looking for.

I find it sometimes is easier to remove the standpivot bolt closest to the spring, letting the stand swing closer to spring which can then be hooked on, then with both hands, manually pull/lever stand back to a position where the bolt can be re-fitted. (prefferably with a help from the missus?) or to where a screw driver can be inserted through the alligned holesto hold it in position while I reposition handsor re assess my predicament!

Hi John,
The simplest way is to feed washers in on both sides of each coil. This lengthens the spring sufficiently to easily fit it on the holding mount. When you push the stand down the washers will fall out as the spring lengthens further. I do this on my featherbed stand spring as well.

I can see that times are hard. I was told to use £1 coins but poor old Richard is already down to 2p pieces and things are so bad down under they are reduced to using mere washers.
Inflation takes its toll yet again ...........
[Postscript - I believe it is still an offence in law here to deface coinage so using washers is at least going to save you a one-way trip to The Tower]

The factory / WD manual shows a device like a bucket-handle pointing tool for levering the tang over the frame lug and I made one but had no success either. It's a dangerous business. I resorted to 2p pieces between each coil but it scratches the paint off and makes the coins unsuitable for circulation....It's still a struggle but it just about works.
