Recommended fettler...

Forums

Hi, I have just joined the club having recently purchased a 1930's Model 50; my first foray into the vintage world. It had to be a Norton and I have found a very original bike. She has been stood for a while, so needs some light fettling and a good checking over before running. I would therefore like someone to give her a look over for me as these bikes are pretty alien to me having come from a staple diet of Guzzi twins.

Would anyone be able to recommend a good mechanic who is familiar with Norton singles in the Bucks, Berks, Oxfordshre area please?

Thanks in advance, Dan

Looks nice. Why do you want someone to spoilt it and take it to bits?I'd remove and clean the carburettor - including the jet block inside (which will be stuck fast and probably need a wooden drift to tap it out) and clean the little air jets. Then check wheel bearings and grease if need be. And clean up the clutch plates and the actuating rod etc. Make sure all the cables are safe, a spot of oil on the magneto lubricator, grease (nearly 20 nipples!), oil, and give her a go! Nothing specialist and you'll find out a bit to get you on the way. Have you a handbook with the servicing data (fork adjustment, lubrication chart etc.)? Your local NOC branch will be sure to be helpful.

David Coopers advice seems good, i.e. an overall check and thorough service, plus some things turning it over with plug out to check the lubrication system is up to par before running. Basically these bikes are simple and rugged so you should have little to fear. I'm in nothamptonshire if that's any good to you.

Regards, Rob.

Thanks for all your comments and offers of help. I have found someone local who knows these bikes through a friend, so he is going to give it the once over whilst I look over his shoulder and learn a bit about them. Will let you know how I progress!

Many thanks, Dan
