Re: 1965 Model 88

Silencers from factory were normal bulbous or straight sided tube ones? Have conflicting advice.

I think that they were the same as the 650SS by that time, the most important thing is to get a nice line on the pipes so as to not have droopy silencers. Plenty of badly made pipes about so extra care needed. If thats a picture of your 88 then the pipes look exactly right, Not so the meggas!!

Hello Nigel - from 1962 the 88SS and 650SS used the same exhaust pipes and silencers. A cross-section of the silencer at the centre would be round whilst the side view would be an offset cigar shape with the entry hole displaced downwards at the bottom of the tube . Looking from the output end about 3 inches in, a small round plate is evident with a small central hole. Down the middle of the cigar from the exhaust pipe entry until the small round plate sat a triangular baffle almost the whole length of the silencer. The exhaust pipes were 1 3/8 inch with a small section for the exhaust ring nut and silencer fixing at 1 5/8 inch. The 1961 88SS had different pipes and silencers to the ones above. The silencer for this year of 88SS (and 99SS) was a perfectly round cigar shape with the left and right side using the same round silencer . The entry hole was on the centre-line of the tube. Your megas look like clones of Triumph T140s. Cheers, Howard

Early Commando (became known as Fastback) silencers are the same as the type on a '65 feathered twin. Mick Hemmings did a very good copy of this silencer. If you can get them they are great. They are probably a bit louder than originals but they last well and look correct. I have used the symmetrical '61 type on many of my SSs and they go and sound fine but look not quite right. Do not buy the type with the enclosed end. They choke the nuts of a fast twin and blow the ends off. Cheers, Howard
