Puncture prevention products

Let down by" Slime" tube sealant in my hour of need iwonder if the collected wisdom of the N.O.C has anything to say on the subject .Local bike shoppe reccommended Tyre weld as the only product thats anygood, but thats only for tubeless tyres!. Something to ward off a catastrophic blowout seems like a goodidea to me! Thanks for listening.

There used to be several products advertised for puncture proofing innertubes, whether they ever worked, or are still available I do not know. One thing is for sure, they would only cope with minor leaks, not a major blow-out.

Hello there,

I asked at the local motor factors recently about tyre sealants and they were definite that they did not recommend the use of any of the 'slime' type products in a road going vehicle as it will lead to out of balance wheels at higher speeds. The aerosol type is the only type they recommend for temporary emergency get you home use only - then get the tyre properly repaired or replaced.

The 'slime' products are good for off road use - i.e agricultural tractors etc or even lawn tractors. It does keep the tyres effectively puncture free and tractors don't normally travel that fast so wheel balance isn't a problem. It might even work on off-road motorcycles.

I know tyre weld is only meant for tubeless tyres but I've used it a couple of times in tubes and it's got the bike home. In one case a mate of ours finished a week long rally with no problems, then just changed the tube when he got home.

The only time I've seen it fail is when the valve had been torn partly out the tube, unfortunately in our haste to get goin we didn't notice this until it was too late and we'd made a mess!

So it doesn't always work but it will get you out of trouble more often than not.

I have used Ultraseal for many years. I cannot be sure that it would work in a tubed tyre as I have not had one puncture with Ultraseal installed. I have had tubeless tyres puncture with Ultraseal installed and it has worked every time. I have never had a problem with wheel balance. My Ducati ST2 and ST4 tourers always had Ultraseal added and I used to cruise at 100mph + in the days when one could get away with that.
