primary cover

Forums

I had an oil leak and I have dismantled the primary.

There was this.

Any help very appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Pierpaolo,

All those bits should be one assembly as part of the inner primary cover - it looks to me like the rivets or screws have failed and the lot has come apart. When together those parts allow the gear box output shaft into the clutch to move about a bit in the inner primary cover, as the gear box can move to correctly adjust the primary chain or belt.

If it was mine I'd drill out the old rivets and use pop rivets or maybe screws and nuts, but you need to ensure that the inner plates and felt washer are free to move around to align with the output shaft.

Hope that helps - regards - Paul.

They are the inner chaincase sealing discs.

At sometime in the past these have been removed and pop riveted together.

They should be spot welded. Ideally you should buy some new plates and a felt seal and take them with your chaincase to a company who can spot weld them in place for you.

Thank you so much, now it's much better!

Shouls I also replace the chaincase sealing band, and the parts subject to wear?

The sealing band loses its spring with age, fit a new one. The primary chain is the one that needs changing if approaching wear limits, my bronze plated clutch just goes on and on and on with the plates still within limits.
