Primary chain case on last singles

Forums

I am rescuscitating a 1936 Model 18 which hasn't run for a few years. It had a tidy up in the early eighties, but this didn't include the engine or gearbox which I doubt has ever been out up to this point and are substantially worn.

I am (hopefully) well on the way to getting it functioning for the summer...thanks to great service from www.racingnorton.com for various bits and pieces, but I will probably be looking at removing the engine this winter for a complete overhaul.

I am lucky enough to have another single engine from one of the last incarnations of the ES2 that I will swap whilst the work is done. It has an alternator and I was told it was 12V.

Of course, I'll have some electrical changes to make but my main question is about the primary chain case, which is missing for this later engine; will an inner and an outer case off any of the later alternator models fit or am I going to try and find one specifically off a single... or make/ adapt something.

I am guessing getting one off a single would be difficult if they were right at the end of the run...

Is there any other reason why I would find fitting this engine difficult?

If you are using a late alternator engine then you would need an alternator type chaincase along with the alloy spacer that carries the inner case. The difference between the single and twin cases is the outer case which is an inch or so wider at the front and along the top run to cover the gap left by the narrower single crankcases.A Dommi one would fit but there would bethe gap. You will also have to check whether the required offset for the engine sprocket (there are at least 3 different offsets) will allow thefitting of the alternator and/or if the alternator type sprocket will line up with the clutch.

Ian.

Hi Richard, I had a 1964 500 single in the 70's. I remember the chaincase was quite short. The scrambles engines had the same crankcase. It is very similar to the N15cs alloy one. I remember the Camshafts were very soft, and pistons impossible to find. Hope you get on OK. ATB, Paul
