Primary case alternator cable exit hole

My basket case Dommie 99 came with a primary chaincase that looks like the primary chain had made an almost completely successful attempt to escape out the back of it. So I bought another one off eBay but the alternator cable exit holes are in slightly different places. My original chaincase has the cable exit near the top of the rear cover. The one I’ve just bought has the cable exit hole about halfway down the rear cover (see photo below). There is also an adjacent small bracket with a hole in it that looks like it’s for routing the cable through. The rest of the cover looks identical to the original one. Have I bought something that isn’t suitable for a slimline Dommie?

On my slimline 99 with original cases the cable hole is about 3/8th dia and only just clears the top chain run (all from memory).

Thanks Robert. In my chaincase the bracket I mentioned has a large (5/8 inch) hole in it which looks like it’s meant to hold the alternator cable away from the chain run - well, that’s what I’m hoping!

This morning I drilled out the welds in the two sealing discs in the rear cover so I could change the felt seal between them but after a lot of drilling, I’ve discovered that there isn’ any kind of seal between the discs. I assumed (wrongly) that there was a felt seal between them - another reason why I dislike the parts catalogues so much - no exploded diagram of many items, e.g. the chaincase and its associated components. I read somewhere on the internet that there was a felt seal between the discs so I thought I should change it - another reason to not believe everything one reads on the internet, even if it sounds believable.

Hi Tony,

I am just finishing a complete rebuild of my 1957 99 and drilled out my rivets too, just so that the rear case could be painted properly. I fitted the felt seals, as on the footrest tunnel, on rebuilding as an extra precaution against leaking oil.

Hopefully Phil will turn up with something on the chaincase hole.  I thought they made a change from the top edge (where mine is, and as Robert says his is) to a lower location to reduce the chance of the chain cutting the cable.  In which case, both are 'correct'.

On the matter of felt seals - there was talk some time ago on the 'singles' pages about a felt seal around between the magneto and magneto chain case, and how it is sometimes present and sometimes not.  But I've been browsing Phil Vincent's 'Tuning for Speed' and in one passage he recommends owners to add such a seal.  Not to keep oil in (it's a Norton - that would be an absurd objective) but to keep abrasive dirt out.  Especially if riding off road or sand racing.  Anyway, what he's written suggests that seals weren't necessarily in the parts list because it was often left to the owner to add them if he wanted to!  Maybe someone can add something?

It seems to be a reminder that just because a felt seal isn't much good at retaining lubricant, it does not follow that it's not worth having.

The only oil that could exit the case at that point will be that which is thrown up by the chain and runs down the back of the case onto the gearbox shaft. I formed a half circle bead of bath mastic on the inner case and "veed" it with a pen knife to drain this oil away from the shaft. Along with case straightening (ala Hudsons script) ,trimming outer case to clear the prop stand mount,"O" ring on the inspection cap,mastic on the footrest shaft rubber, and a coating of Red Rubber grease on the band seal, I can go many months with no top up and no drips under the bike when "up the café". Bliss!!.

Thanks Dick and David. I spent an hour or so flattening the two disks as they were a bit buckled in places. Now that they are flat again (with the raised ring near the centre) they fit very snugly against the inner chaincase so I’m not sure where a felt seal would go - I’ll have a better look when I get round to rebuilding it all.

Robert, it sounds like you’ve discovered Nirvana in getting your chaincase leak-proof. I like the idea of that bead of silicon above the gearbox shaft - I think I’ll copy that. You say that you put silicon on the footrest rod rubber - what is that ‘rubber’ - is it a seal of some sort?
