Pre-war spoke threads

Forums

For cosmetic reasons I am trying to replace individual spoke nipples on my 1936 16H retaining the original butted 8g/10g spokes. Could anybody please confirm the spoke thread which I believe to be 10 swg cycle thread, which I measure as3.6mm and would therefore presumablybe 40 tpi. My reason for querying is that whilst attempting to order a set from Central Wheel Components they advised that they would be UNF, which I don't believe is correct

It sounds quite possible that the original thread forms are no longer available. ex-WD packs of spokes do turn up from time to time (wrapped in green greased paper, usually).

I'd ask someone like Russell Motors if they have any NOS nipples. They wouldn't even have to be Norton if you only want the nipples.

Hi Pete,

They are a rolled thread not a cut thread therefore dies are NOT made tomake them. Some places sell what purports to be a die but it is only for thread cleaning and not extending the thread. The thread form does not appear to correspond to any standard thread.

The reason that they are using UNF is probably because the thread rollers were cheaper than having a special set made to match the old profiles. The rollers are horrificly expensive anyway (the roller boxes cost a grand or so without the rollers themselves)and to have a special tap made as well could easily cost over £75 for an HSStap made in the UK.

Ihave looked into the costs of getting obscure cycle taps/dies made, it just isn't viable.

Jim
