Piston protrusion

Forums

With reference to my 1956 Dominator 99, could anyone please advise me as to whether the top of  a standard  piston should be level with the top of the barrel / spigots or should it protrude above the barrel top and if so by how much ?

The reason for my request is that a previous owner had obviously machined most of the top boss off and I am in the process of restoring the top end and in spite of fitting a 0.035" compression plate under the barrel the piston top is just below the top of the new liner spigots. As I have fitted the barrel to the crankcase complete with new pistons I am reluctant have to disturb it. If I have to relatively lower the piston top height then would a thicker copper cylinder head gasket be the way to go ? I appreciate the earlier pushrod comments that have been made I will have to carefully check the rocker / valve geometry and clearances.

I do not want to increase the compression over standard. Whilst I am a on a steep learning curve with my relatively new acquisition confusion keeps making it's appearance !
