Painting a 99 tank

Forums

I want to paint my, solid colour, 99 tank. It isn't in the correct colour and it's a solid colour. I have no other tank to compare to so can some one tell me if the second colour on the lower side of the tank comes up to the exact point on the front of the tank emblem? As per this photo

It's very hard to see without a high quality close-up.

Or, better still, would someone please measure the width of this colour band?

thanks!

My catalogue shows the join between the two colours passing through both points of the tank badge. In 1962 all the lower panels were described as Dove Grey. The Standard 99 is described in 1962 as having a Grey top panel with the lower Dove Grey panel.

The top panel varies between the standard, De Luxe as well as the 88 and the 99 and the 88 and 99SS variants. HTH.

"Passing through both points" should be enough for the painter, thanks!

Mine is the 99SS.

Bruce, my 1962 catalogue shows the 99SS as being Grey and Dove Grey. All other cycle parts were grey including mudguards, with chrome guards as an optional extra on the 88 and 99SS models. I think there is some technical data on this website somewhere that will give precise shading references for the colours.

Bruce, I have found RAL 1013 is an excellent match for dove grey and if your mudguards are also dove grey, they can be RAL 1013 powder coated.

Should have my 1960 99 finished before long to show you.

This is a photo from a Bonhoms auction, my mudguards will be painted, I understood they should match the colour of the lower tank band and the shock shrouds, is that correct? To my eye it would look best that way.

Thanks Anna, hopefully mine will look similar but with a correctly routed cable. However I was asking about the colours....

Well the correct two tone Colours are Norton Metalic Grey and Dove grey, as in the photo with two tone grey seat, ether painted Dove grey Mudgurads Or has in the photo a Chrome set, some of these machines where fitted with 4 inch rased Handle bars if you wished ,And the folding kick-starter was optional has where the Two into one pipes , I do have the parts cataloge of all these little Beautys Bracebridge motorcycles at there best, Yours Anna J

Have to agree with Anna, thats about as tidy as you will find,The speedo drive works ok the way its fitted ,just too long . To be picky the pipe and silencer run is a bit low and should kick up a little under the box and the cheroot silencers give a neater line. Still a good looking bike. Can you spot the other seven things to change to make a minter?.

Thanks Anna. I have the slightly raised bars and the two into one pipes. Bruce

The siamese pipes were recommended by the factory for better power and there was the bonus of less weight and clear access to the drive side. The downside is that they tend to rust at the junction and the current supply use a Commando type collet fitting on the timing side , are a poor fit to the port angles and run too close to the downtubes. If you have some orriginal ones you are better off getting them re-chromed.The standard low rise bars do leave you sailing in the wind a bit at motorway speeds.I'm thinking a Givi screen or similar for mine.

Robert - good comments. Mine (from Armours about 8 years ago) do fit well and have conventional nuts (one of which is captive). But the plating in between the V is not so good (nor can it be as I understand it). The other issue is that the internal passageway from the side to the main pipe is not particularly smooth or clear in mine.I have the 'downdraft head' - which won't be on the 99 - so I've no idea about fit to the slightly earlier design with narrower pipe plan angle.

Now has for higher bars you can get, for a much comfortable ride, from 4 inch to 8 inch but the commando 5 inch maybe the best , but I do find the Manxman 8 inch bars a nice riding prostion , I do not ride fast anymore like I use too , now I ride on Aor B road at anywhere between 50mph and 60 mph, sometimes 40mph can be nice out on a quiet back road in the country air on a nice sunny day No a nice looking Norton like these Model 99 or 88, from 1960 to 1963 models or even a big single model 50 or ES2 or if you like a little light twin good too they where all good motorcycle in that time period , I go back to the 1960s tomorrow, if I could, not much money but we had some good care free times , yours

Thanks!

Hi Bruce, If i were building a show bike (and i will not!) I would change the Hooter (too modern),the control levers (pattern different),timing cover fixings to std, plastic cable ties for rubber, find orriginal exhaust nuts, clip the ignition cables as orrig, seat line should follow tank, oil pipes should be black,---have to stop now this is too anal!!.

Bruce, I have said this many times so I am surprised you are asking about Dove Grey paint.

RAL Colours are available in the US of A and one suspects, Canada too.

The RAL code for Norton Dove Grey is 1013 and is the closest match I could find to an original unfaded Dove Grey, in fact I couldn't tell them apart. .Also, the good thing about RAL 1013 is that you can have it powder coated too.

Hope this helps.

I have some orriginal paint on my 99 and the dove grey is a pretty drab colour , I can well understand some owners picking a lighter shade. Also beware of copying headlamp colours as lucas supplied these painted and they do not match well.

Quite right, getting a bit too anal. I'm not building a show bike either, I just want it to look period. cheers!

Neil, It surprised me when the only painter I know and trust to do a great job said his suppliers couldn't match those codes. So I've ordered paint from RS paints. Enough my painter to match.
