Oil, which oil and filter or not, Model 50

Forums

Hi i am nearing the end of rebuilding my 1959 Model 50 and am wondering what oil i should put in it and whether to fit a cartridge type oil filter. iIdid run the bike on straight 50 before the rebuild (with 40) in winter, although that is a pain as sometimes you end up changing oil before you prehaps have done the mileage to warrant it. However with all the advances in oil is worth putting 20/50 or 10/40 in and if so would other people add a filter or not?

Thanks Jak

A cartridge filter is a good idea and always worth fitting. I'm not going to get into a mass discussion about oil as it's been covered time and time again with everyone having a different point of view. There's nothing wrong with 40w 0r 50w oil for your bike, you don't have to swap them in summer and winter unless you're in a very cold country. In which case I doubt you'd be riding the bike? Use 40w Summer and Winter and it will be fine.

I was put off cartridge filters when the oil pipe came off one and I ended up with a wrecked engine. I wouldn't fit another. My general rule is straight 40 for roller big ends (singles), multigrade for plain bearing big ends (twins).

Andover now list the filter mount with barbed pipes, loss of a pipe would seem pretty unlikley with one of those.

The AN filter mounting is more like it. The previous Norvil one had short smooth pipes - not easy to get a good attachment. Hopefully current Norvil ones are better. Still, it was a salutory lesson on what can happen when good intentions go wrong.

If you already have the short smooth pipes you can solder on some serious brass barbs and then they will also be the right diameter for the oil line.
