Oil filter sizes

An annoying observation....... I bought an oil filter kit from an autojumble store at Nettley, it was marked RGM and came with a filter. I fitted this to my Jubilee where it sits just clear of the centre stand when itâs up. Itâs time for an oil change so I popped to my local auto store and bought a filter for a 2cv (mahle oc5), which I thought was a result, unfortunately although it fits the holder it is longer and now acts as the stand stop :(

So I ordered a new filter from RGM which, as always arrived by return! :) Sadly this too is too long (not RGMs fault I might add) you can see the difference in the pic below

After a bit of cross referencing it seems that this filter also fits most Ducatiâs and the HF153 and Champion CO 053 is 72mm not the 80mm quoted by Mahle for the OC 5. I found the EMGO ref ( the filter that came with the original kit) but canât find its size anywhere. So if size does matter be aware that there are more than Size that fits the aftermarket filter kits.

When the HF arrives Iâll report on its size, in the meantime if anyone needs the slightly longer version, Iâm building a collection!

Thanks Bob, I just ventured outside and took this pic, I think the trouble with the cross ref charts is that they arenât necessarily the same length. Your chart shows the OC5 as the Marle equivalent, thatâs the one I have that is too long ( and yes sorry itâs the length Iâm concerned about).

As you can see the EMGO is much shorter, sadly it doesnât have a number. I might ring RGM tomorrow and see if they used to use their filters.

If you zoom in youâll see the EMGO is about 65mm and the Mahle about 80mm tall.

Hi Terence, out of interest how do you know they are EMGO? The pic in the spares catalogue doesnât give anything away!! If you have one could you measure it please, just the height or depth rather than the width?

Richard, thanks for that tip too, although the HF website says itâs 72 mm and only 65mm wide?

Hello Dan. They're marked "EMGO" on the box (and filter). I've bought several over the years from the club and they fit my RGM filter head with no problem. The one I'm measuring now is sealed in plastic, so C/W its rubber gasket it's 63mm deep and 76mm wide. The seal will probably compress a bit on fitting. Hope this is helpful. Terry.

Thanks Terry, very helpful, Iâve ordered one from the club, shame EMGO donât have their part number on the thing ... Iâll continue my investigations!

Just spent two hours ( that I wonât get back !) looking at the dumpy EMGO filter numbers, sadly they donât mention whether they are metric or imperial , so I had tocross ref them to Mahle to check........ I havenât found one yet the right size, may give up !

Ah brilliant Terence, 26910 is the number I need, thank you!

Dan finally found an EMGO chart for what it is worth, the only application for 26910 is the Norton '68 on, it states Commando again of no susbtance really, strangely I could find no cross reference alternative anywhere, perhaps some else can. academic really but just interesting. kind regards

What I did with the rgm remote unit was to get a threaded sleeve made that screwed onto the existing threaded shaft (loctited on ) and has a larger 20mm diameter on the outside thread so that i could use a common locally sourced oil filter. Otherwise I would have to import new from the UK whenever I needed one. I have these remote units on my T110, Mercury and Ariel VH using a Z307 oil filter Height of this unit is 50mm and fits perfectly across the width of the rgm remote unit.

Dominic, I think your adapter will be 3/4" outside diameter by 16 TPI not 20mm. the citroen filters are 16mm thread. Your adapter is a good idea to increase the amount of oil filters available. Most car filters are 3/4" though I notice quite a few are moving away from canister type filters back to paper cartridge type.

I can find plenty of 16mm filters just not any short enough! I can understand switching to 3/4 in USA the Harley filters will then fit.

Itâs definitely a 20 x 1.5 metric thread on the Gud z307.

The reason I chose that filter is the height of 5cm. Makes it easy to fit in tight spots.

It fits a number of Renault clio and twingo models.
