Quite possibly (if it has 850 type valve guides) it may just be that a valve guide oil seal has popped off...there is a lot of oil up in the Commando head. Has anything been done to the head recently ?

its a 1971 750. no nothing has been done to the engine

It didn't have inlet guide seals originally then...but they could have been fitted. A loose valve guide is another possibilty or piston / ring trouble.

Just as a matter of interest, how long had it been stood before you fired it up?

If the crankcase was full of oil it will get past the piston rings and blow it into the exhaust - to appear round lockrings.

wipe it down, drain sump clean filter and try again, check oil is returning to tank you may have a blockage.

The bike was last run only 10 days ago. Was running sweat.

maybe I'll drain it and try again see what happens

not got a commando. just wondering if the petrol was left on and a sticking carb float then flooded the engine with petrol. i don't know if that would leak petrol externally or internally filling the sump with petrol giving the impression of oil. just a thought .Baz
