Noisy exhaust

Forums

The exhaust note on my 1935 ES2 is very loud. So much so that I get disapproving looks from pedestrians and my riding mates don't like to follow me too closely. I was wondering if anyone has any experience of fitting silencers from the likes of Armours because I am thinking of trying a different silencer.

Any suggestions?

I fitted a goldie pattern silencer from Armours to my B31 (OK I'm just a hooligan). It was particularly noisy - no baffles whatsoever. So I got some galvanisedsquare wire mesh - the kind you find on rabbit hutches - and rolled it up and shoved it into the silencer. Still a nice note but much more acceptable. Cost? Nowt as it was an off-cut from another job. That was about 4 years ago and it's still fine. Gordon.

I like the sound of that Gordon. Worth a try at that price!

Hi.

The lads doing track days stuff crushed drinks cans into their boxes if they fail the noise test at scrutineering. Presumably only from "Light" drinks.laugh

A friend had a Continental GT which had a silencer lined with glass fibre - absorbtion baffling. However, this also absorbed any oil chucked in by the exhaust (it was an Oilfield after all) and on a long run would fire impressive smoke rings and occasionally burst into flame. Most entertaining!
