NOC Handbook, new edition or online?

Years ago, I remember the club publishing and sending out a collection of technical articles, as the NOC handbook, this was a handy little tome, and I still refer to it, but I wish we could have a newer version, particularly with Mike Pembertons collected articles in it, failing this could the back catalogue of articles from Roadholder be made available through this website for members? I know we should all keep all our Roadholders properly indexed in a fire proof vault, but I have mine all jumbled up and I can never find the one I want.

I recognise that this would mean a lot of work for somebody, but there is a wealth of technical gen there, not easily accessible.

Great idea!

I frequently refer to the INOA technical digest (even though I don't have a commando)

It would be brilliant to have a tech book to cover tweaks and mods for other models.

It would be more manageable to reproduce articles that are already in existence, for example as Niall suggests, Mike Pemberton's. We are in the process of editing and putting the long awaaited Dominator Service notes online. This will ensure that a considerable amount of information previously unpublished will be available to members

Dear All

It is interesting you raise this question.

Some years ago 4 may be, I decided to compile a spread sheet with ALL the technical article in road holder for around the previous 15 or more years as I was fed up with people 're-inventing the wheel' every year or so and also for my own use in finding information....ie, I have seen that before, where is it??

I spent a year to eighteen months on this difficult task, including holidays in the sun.

I sent this spread sheet to the then mag editor who said he was very impressed with the work and wanted to publish, I said no,I was a few road holder mags missing and I wanted to finish the work, so I went to a classic bike show where committee members attended and asked NL for copies of the missing mags to have or borrow to finish the work (about 6-8).

He said 'you have waisted your time, the club has this already compiled', I asked if I could have a copy....."NO" can I have the missing road holder mags?...."NO"

I still have the spread sheet for my own use, missing some road holder editions.

So this is why, you have not / never will never see tech info, it is top secret.

Nick, that sounds incredible if as you describe - what an opportunity missed. If you could list the RHs that you are missing to complete your spreadsheet I am sure members would help out. I have most issues from Nov/Dec 1977 onwards and I would be only too happy to send you photocopies of any needed amongst these.

Nick

Nick, that sounds incredible if as you describe - what an opportunity missed. If you could list the RHs that you are missing to complete your spreadsheet I am sure members would help out. I have most issues from Nov/Dec 1977 onwards and I would be only too happy to send you photocopies of any needed amongst these.

About the same as Phil has just published.

Now it has been established that an index of technical articles does exist, is it possible that these could be scanned in and made available (to members only if need be, probably better if it was) via the Technical section of the website?. As Nick says it would provide a resource for new members who, otherwise, invariably ask the same questions, not that that is necessarily a bad thing as it does engage them with other members.......

Anyway, I digress, now I know that the article on OHV valve timing I wanted is in RH 206, if only I could find RH 206...

It would be more manageable to reproduce articles that are already in existence, for example as Niall suggests, Mike Pemberton's. We are in the process of editing and putting the long awaaited Dominator Service notes online. This will ensure that a considerable amount of information previously unpublished will be available to members

I've down loaded and save both file types but can't open them with MS Excel. Which version are they saved in?

The reason is the file suffix.

It should be .xls NOT -xls. Similarly .xlsx NOT -xlsx

was the Dominator Service Notes ever completed and published?

I'd really like a copy of that! Who would know? ... I contacted the original poster and asked.

I would happily pay for Dominator Service Notes. Phil's index of technical articles is excellent except, like many others I suspect, I don't keep my old Roadholders. Sacrilege I know but when you live in a tiny house with another half who is a bit of a hoarder some things have to go. Can't be the other half, she has more bikes than I do and she would take them with her.

I was unable to open the document either and simply copied and pasted then into XL.

Like others I have not kept the original Roadholders and simply, over time, cut out and kept articles that interested me.

The index is an invaluable cross reference to the Roadholder which are kept here on line, but for this purpose it's just a pity that they are referenced only by Issue Number and not Month and Year as they are on the forum (a job for someone over the dark winter nights - if anyone is so inclined and has access to the originals please publish the result)

Please Bruce if you do get a response let us know.

Can anyone enlighten me as regards opening the above file. Changed to .xis from -xis and still does not open. Using Microsoft XL 2010

Attached to this note is a copy of the original RH Tech Index File as first compiledby John Morgan. I think that it was done as an Excel file but I could only open it using Open Office.

I do believe that the RH editor has now updated this file with a view to eventually adding it alongside the historic issues of Roaholder that can be viewed on this site.

Change it to .XLS not .xis - I used caps to show the letter is an L. It opens for me fine with the same version of Excel.

Thanks Bruce got it that time. Still wish the months and years were shown though. Thanks for all your hard work I can image in the time it would have taken.

PS: Ive discovered there is an index citing month and year in the Roadholder Section, but not to the one we have been discussing.

Although this index goes back a long time, I presume the only Roadholders available on line only go back as far as 2006. If that is the case there is a long way to go to have a definitive collection to refer to.

Niall. Unfortunately RH206 will not help you much as the only reference I can find to valve timing is a letter from John Morgan asking for information on this and giving the settings on his bike, which he thought were wrong. No-one offered any advice in RH207 or 208. RH208 did however have an interesting article by Mike P on his ES2 manx replica where he was playing about with cams and valve timings amongst other things. Email me if you want a copy - email on Branch Page of RH. Dougie

Hi Richard,

The NOC are in the process of scanning in ALL roadholders back to Issue 1. They will slowly be put up on this site in batches of a year at a time.

As I am sure you will appreciate, this does take time but we will get there.

Regards

Tony
