Hi, I'm a new member ( my dad was a member 35 years ago, but sadly he has passed away now)
My dad and I both have 1954 ES2 Nortons but he did all the tinkering with both our bikes so I don't have a lot of knowledge on the ES2 workings.
I cannot start my ES2, there is no spark, I have bought a new plug.
I recently started it after not running it for 3 years and it started with a lot of kicking, I rode up and down the road for a few minutes, and now it won't start again?
I do have mechanical bike knowledge from competing in trials and motocross but all 2 strokes!
Please can anyone give me some ideas?
Thanks
Lee Hudson.

As Robert alluds to, your problems could be many and varied. But the easy ones are:
Rub a thin piece of clean cardboard between the point. If there is any trace of black on the cardboard then you have probably found the problem.
Remove the high tension pick up and wash it with petrol. Using a pencil sized stick with some cotton rag dipped in petrol, insert it in the hole where the pick up came from, and turn the motor over with the kick-start WITH the plug removed.
Lastly, reduce the plug gap to about 10 thou and see if you get a spark.
Anything else will become too difficult to describe here, and will probably require professional help.
Bright Spark have a very good website but it probably helps if you have a basic knowledge of magnetos to grasp what they are saying.
Good luck

Hi Lee,
Firstly, welcome to the club.
I would suggest a good starting point would be to get in touch with your local branch:-
https://www.nortonownersclub.org/branches/sussex
There are usually knowledgeable people available why would be happy to come along and give advice and support.
Regards
Tony

You need to do some heavy reading on magnetos, or magdynos in your case, points pickups, earthing brush, plug caps etc.
